Bilingual SNAP Facilitator – Union Square Main Streets

Position Description:
Union Square Main Streets (USMS) is seeking an enthusiastic and dedicated candidate to increase accessibility efforts by acting as Bilingual SNAP Facilitator for the 2023 Union Square Farmers Market in Somerville, MA.

In this position, the Bilingual SNAP Facilitator will have the opportunity to enhance their skills in communication, marketing, and knowledge of programs aimed at increasing access to local foods. This position will aid the Market Manager and Farmers Market Vendors to ensure a positive customer experience by facilitating SNAP transactions, translating processes related to SNAP/HIP transactions, as well as interactions with volunteers and market customers regarding benefits programs and the market as a whole. The ideal candidate should be reliable, friendly, self-motivated, and comfortable communicating with a diverse customer base.

Responsibilities
Communicate effectively with customers to explain food access programs like SNAP & HIP
Administer local token currency and process transactions for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits
Set up, break down, and staff the Market Manager Tent to display and distribute educational materials, capture market data and sell promotional merchandise
Be responsible for SNAP token sanitation
Assist vendors, volunteers, and consumers by providing market-related information and general aid as appropriate
Safeguard the tokens as if they are cash
Create an inclusive atmosphere for farmers and customers alike
Other duties as assigned

[Part-Time (Hourly)] Hourly Rate: 17-17

Schedule Requirements:
1st shift
Union Square Farmers Market Commitment
6hrs/week on Saturdays from May 13–October 28 from 8am–2pm
This position may be shared with another individual, in which case facilitators would alternate Saturdays
The Farmers Market is open rain or shine from 9am-1pm
Availability for training one day between May 1-13, 2023

Minimum Requirements:

Resourceful and creative, with strong problem-solving skills
Demonstrated ability to learn quickly and through hands-on experience
Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment while handling competing priorities
Demonstrated ability and desire to meet new people, foster connections, build community relationships, and ability to talk with a wide range of individuals, including those occasionally disgruntled
Patience
Ability to lift 50lbs
CPR/First Aid certification preferred
Ability to speak Spanish, Portuguese, or Mandarin a plus
Level of English Required: Intermediate

Salary
Compensation will be paid bi-weekly. This is an hourly position paying $17.00/hr and supervised by the Market Manager and the Executive Director.
