GLX/Mass-WIN Launch Celebration

On June 24, members of Jobs for Somerville celebrated the creation of the GLX/Mass-WIN Workforce Initiative with Mayor Joe Curtatone, Senator Patricia Jehlen, Representative Denise Provost, and MBTA representatives Karen DeSpirito, Theodore Basta, and Mary Ainsley. The week before, officials from Somerville, Cambridge, and Medford, legislators, labor unions, and community partners joined MBTA General Manager Dr. Beverly Scott and other representatives from MassDOT and MBTA to sign the memorandum of understanding that formalizes this partnership and establishes an Access and Opportunity Committee to oversee the initiative.

This is an exciting victory for Jobs for Somerville members, who have spent years working to create good job opportunities for Somerville residents. The Mass-WIN program will help low-income and minority residents of Somerville, Cambridge, and Medford to access training and job placement on the construction of the Green Line Extension and it will create additional career opportunities for Somerville residents. The partners will soon begin the process of recruitment, and Jobs for Somerville will be actively participating on the Access and Opportunity Committee.

We want to thank Senator Jehlen, Representative Provost, Representative Toomey, and former Representative Sciortino, as well as Mayor Joe Curtatone, for their dedication and commitment to helping us make this goal a reality.

SCC’s First Source Program will play a key role in linking job seekers to the Mass-WIN program. Click here for more information about our First Source Program. If you care about good jobs in the community, join Jobs for Somerville, at our next meeting on August 13. For more information, contact René.

Somerville sits on the original homelands of the Massachusett, Wampanoag, Naumkeag, and Nipmuc tribal nations. We acknowledge the painful history of genocide and forced removal from this territory, and we honor and respect the many diverse Indigenous peoples still connected to this land on which we live and work.
