Job Summary :
Reporting to the Associate Dean of Development and Alumni Relations (DevAR), the Director
of Marketing and Engagement (DME) will use marketing expertise that sets success metrics with a focus on increase and deepen the GSD donor pool, develop a thoughtful market engagement strategy, helps in the creation of strategic fund-raising priorities, and own expansion of the Annual Fund. The DME should be able to think expansively across the DevAR organization with a focus to leverage events, drive incremental revenue, and incorporate all functions in a strategic approach. The DME is a member of the Associate Dean’s Cabinet and will work with the Associate Dean to design, build and implement the projects that are vetted and approved.
The Director of Marketing and Engagement position requires a passionate team-builder who can work well with multi-functional teams, both in DevAR, in the school and around the Harvard campus. The DME must be a strategic and creative thinker, have a positive can-do attitude, and work well in a constantly evolving environment. The DME, with the Director of Student-Alumni Engagement, co-own the ENGAGEMENT common goal. DevAR Common Goals include Revenue, Engagement, Donor Satisfaction and Employee Satisfaction. As a leadership team member, the DME would participate in success of all common goals.
Position Description :
TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Work with the Associate Dean to focus on increasing revenue opportunities starting at the top end and including all levels of giving.
Designs, develops, and implements a strategy for GSD alumni, donor, and friends, that fosters reconnection, participation, and investment in the school’s priorities for initiatives such as GSD Public Programs, DevAR Events, social media platforms, Harvard Key updates, Alumni Award Program, iLab Funding for the MDE program, and others as assigned.
Ability to analyze all funding streams with a focus on creating increased opportunity in all giving areas. Apply a marketing, demand creation approach to the GSD Annual Fund. Utilize marketing expertise to increase alumni participation and annual fund growth through campaigns, and in partnership with the Major Gift team and Event team.
Create a strategic experience for GSD’s Annual Fund donors. This will include rethinking and potentially rebranding the Josep Lluís Sert Council and the creation of affinity for donors giving at higher levels that will support targeted Annual Fund gifts.
Partner with DevAR Communications to:
Review DevAR, GSD, and public event talking points for the Associate Dean
Increase Donor Satisfaction and develop a plan for a joyous donor experience
Work with outside consultants to develop a DevAR Brand House and voice
Alumni & Friends website positioning
Conduct weekly team meetings
Work with the University Development Office on projects to highlight the GSD
Helps develop the next capital campaign in partnership with DevAR Cabinet.
Establish a marketing strategy for the GSD’s Racial Equity and Anti-Racism Fund as it relates to corporate giving in addition to any individual annual funds as requested by the Associate Dean. This will be an ongoing effort that will require new and innovative thinking annually.
Oversee the positioning, writing, and project management for fundraising product literature for priority needs. Assist with positioning, writing, and project management of donor proposals of 1M+. Ultimately manages an additional writing resource.
Create and maintain fundraiser templates and toolkit for individual proposals under $1M.
Write/review letters, announcements, presentations, proposals and/or speeches on behalf of the Associate Dean, as requested.
Partner with the Operations and Administration team to determine the Engagement common goal data needed for longer-term strategy and planning purposes and for specific projects. Partner with Operations to review all data as needed for specific projects.
Other duties and projects as assigned by the Associate Dean.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Supervises the Assistant Director of Annual Giving and external resources focused on increasing annual giving and writing contractors. Shares administrative and project support with the Director of Communications.

Basic Qualifications :
Bachelor’s degree required and a minimum of 5-10 years of relevant experience
Marketing, communications, and/or fundraising background
Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills
Strong project management skills
Flexible, comfortable working in a fast-paced and sometimes ambiguous environment
Willing to establish and promote strong working relationships with colleagues at all levels of the organization
Thrive in a constantly changing environment, prioritizing, and executing numerous tasks simultaneously, both independently and as part of a team
Additional Qualifications and Skills :
Knowledgeable on current communications trends, marketing best practices, and industry resources Design background preferable
Management experience with a proven ability to motivate, engage and work with staff and donors
Sophisticated and comprehensive understanding of giving principles and practices; high level of professionalism, collegiality, self-motivation, and organization
Ability to prioritize a heavy and diverse workload
Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suite
